Dentist Serving Columbus and Grove City Ohio Reveals 5 Disturbing and Important Facts About Living With Missing Teeth

As a dentist in Grove City, Ohio I often treat patients who see dentists in Columbus, Ohio and surrounding areas if the patient is looking for specialized services because Grove City Dental provides a high level of patient care. Yet, I’m still surprised at how people with missing teeth, who either use removable dentures or don’t seek treatment at all, live on average close to ten years less than people who have dental implants.

Yes, you read that right, research has demonstrated that patients who have removable dentures or for those folks who don’t seek treatment may have a shorter life span.

Much of the reason for that is that they just can’t chew with the full force of natural teeth – they may have as little as 10% of their original chewing force.  Dental implants, on the other hand, give you 90% of that chewing force – enabling a patient to eat  much as they did before they lost their teeth.

Some other important facts about living with missing teeth:

*    The link between the loss of teeth from gum disease and the increased risk of stroke and heart attack has been well researched.  When teeth are lost, the damage the gum disease created doesn’t go away and the body has been permanently weakened.

*    People without teeth spend approximately 17% more on drugs due to increased health issues.

*    With missing teeth, there is evidence of an increased rate of stomach and intestinal disorders due to the patient’s inability to chew properly.

*    Due to a loss of function and diminished sense of taste, full denture patients suffer from a higher rate of systemic disease that affects the whole body.

*    When people experience embarrassment or self-consciousness while smiling or speaking due to the movement of their dentures, their levels of self-esteem sink and they begin to negatively change the way they act or think about themselves.

If you or someone you love have missing teeth or removable dentures that make it difficult to chew, implants can be an amazing solution.

If you’d like to come in for a free consultation about your options, just call my office at 614-808-1700 to set up an appointment.  There’s no obligation and it just might change your life for the better.

Local Grove City Ohio Dentists Talks About How Missing Teeth Literally May Cause You To Appear Older?

I always keep up with the latest dental research.  And recently, I came across some statistics that really shook me up.

I knew that missing teeth had a lot of bad effects on people’s appearance – effects that most don’t realize happen.   For example, bone tissue is lost in the mouth area, there is a loss of muscle tone in the jaw, causing the person to appear older and more wrinkled.

But the impact on health can also be substantial.   Here are some numbers for you to consider:

*    At least 69 percent of adults ages 35 to 44 have lost at least one tooth.

*    A staggering 26 percent of people between the ages of 65 to 74 have lost all their teeth.

*    Life expectancy has increased from 45 to 70 years of age, creating the need for longer lasting teeth – and the continued ability to eat healthy foods to maintain strength and well-being.

This last point is important.  Why?  Because of the last statistic I want to share you, which comes from a long-term study done by The National Institute of Health

*    Those who used implants and fixed bridgework to take the place of missing teeth lived on average 9.8 years longer than those who didn’t.

That’s because these procedures help you regain 90% of the chewing force of natural teeth – and also help you build an attractive, confident, and healthy smile.

Your health and quality of life will be important to you as you grow older.  If you do have missing teeth, or know someone who does, I’m offering a limited number of free consultations to discuss options in a relaxed, no-stress way.

Get the smile you deserve. Give us a call and we’ll be glad to share your options and answer your questions. Call 614-808-1700 Today.

Want A Family? Grove City Dentists SharesThe Surprising Connection Between Periodontal Disease and Infertility in Both Men and Woman:Discover The Answer To Your Questions

Causes of infertility, data compiled in the United Kingdom 2009. Reference: Regulated fertility services: a commissioning aid - June 2009, from the Department of Health UK (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

You may be surprised to discover that a number of studies have linked fertility issues to periodontal disease. And this link is there for both men and women. Now I’m not saying if you get great dental care like you’d receive at Grove City Dental then all of your fertility concerns will be resolved, but I am saying that getting the proper diagnoses and treatment for gum disease may help in some cases. Not only has there been a link to periodontal disease and fertility but they have also discovered that premature birth and low infant birth weight may be impacted too.

The research seems to indicate that many women are vulnerable to periodontal conditions during pregnancy and the best way to help with this situation is to make more frequent visits to the dentist during pregnancy. Yes, this may not sound like the most appealing thing to do while pregnant, but ladies let’s face it, it will not be nearly as challenging as your regular OB-GYN visits-right?

I’ve provided links to a couple of articles for you to read to help you discover more about this connection, but if you have
questions that are not answered by the articles then please feel free to call Grove City Dental at 614-808-1700 and schedule
a cleaning. We can address your questions and if there is need for periodontal disease treatments you can rest assured that
Grove City Dental will provide you with the highest level of dental care.

Enjoy your reading and give us a call with any questions. We value the opportunity to serve all of your dental care needs.

Sedation Dentistry used to be something of a “secret.”  It was only available to a limited few and not widely available or affordable.

All that has changed in recent years, and we’re happy to offer it at our dental practice for those who seek no-stress, comfortable, pain-free dentistry, which is why I’ve been telling you about it in these emails.

I’d like to share with you 7 major benefits our patients tell us they receive from their Sedation Dentistry treatments.

1.  No more living with painful teeth because of fear.
2.  No shots and no needles.
3.  Sedation makes it possible to do the work of 6 to 8 appointments in only 1 or 2 when
extensive work is needed.
4.  Patients are finally able to have the attractive, healthy smile they’ve been wanting,
but have been putting off, due to their fear of the dentist.
5.  They are not be unconscious during treatment, but in a state of relaxed sedation.
6.  Patients who used to have trouble getting numb find that they respond perfectly fine
to sedation once they’re relaxed.
7.  Patients have little or no memory of the treatment – not even the sounds or smells of
the dental office which made many of them uncomfortable.

Sedation Dentistry makes many important dental improvements possible.  For example, many of our patients were fed up living with missing teeth – and they wanted a permanent solution.   Dental implants provide that solution – they’re virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth, require little extra care and are much more powerful and natural than dentures.

If you’re a candidate for implants – or need any other important dental procedure you’ve been putting off – I invite you to call us at 614-808-1700 to talk about what we can do for you through the miracle of Sedation Dentistry.

I hope you’ll call and schedule a talk with us.  Please know that this is a “guilt-free” zone and we only want to help – there is no obligation.

Grove City Dentist Reveals Estimate: "3 Million Teeth Are Lost Because Of Youth Sports Activities..."

Missing Tooth In Grove City? Let Grove City Dental Emergency Dental Care Help

Grove City Dentist Offers Under Armour Mouth Guards In Honor Of U.S. National Youth Sports Safety Month

Wow!! Did you know that 3 million teeth are lost because of youth sports activities, not to mention the addition of head, facial and jaw injuries each and every year?

That’s an estimate revealed in a recent study that I read, but the study said it could actually be even more. So the big question is what can you as a parent do about this-right?

There are various opinions and I will offer some thoughts to this topic. Grove City Dental offers custom mouth guards that
have amazing results. They are the Under Armour mouth guards. But they are not for everyone. If your child still has more
baby teeth than adult teeth then maybe a regular mouth guard like what you would purchase over the counter at a store may
be the best bet for you. But if your child has more adult teeth than baby teeth then the purchase of a custom made mouth
guard would and should be something for you to strongly consider. In fact, studies have shown that he proper custom made
mouth guard may even improve your child’s overall athletic performance in addition to better protection of their teeth.

So when you consider the initial purpose of protecting your child’s teeth with a custom made mouth guard combined with
the potential of enhancing their overall athletic performance then you really stand to profit from getting your child
a custom made mouth guard for baseball, basketball, and a custom made mouth guard for football.

Your teeth are worth getting a mouth guard customized. By the way, you may be surprised to discover that basketball
and baseball are the two biggest mouth-injuring sports.

How To Care For A Knocked Out Tooth

If your child experiences a mouth injury that may dislodge or break a tooth it is vital to see a professional dentist
within 24 hours. The ultimate goal would be to get the tooth back in the mouth within 30 minutes for the best chance
of having a long term survival of the tooth. If your child is old enough and aware enough to be able to not
swallow the tooth then you may want to gently and carefully place the tooth back in the socket and get to a dentist
as quickly as possible, but please to do not do this if you feel your child is too young or not aware
enough and may possibly swallow the tooth. If you can’t put the tooth back in the socket then place the
tooth in milk (NO NOT PUT THE TOOTH IN WATER) and be careful to NOT HANDLE THE TOOTH BY THE ROOT because
the root is easily damaged and that will impact the chances of successfuly saving the tooth.

Local Dentist in Grove City, Ohiol Offers Oral Cancer Screening In Honor of Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month

Posted on: April 5th, 2012 by Dr. Schumann 2 Comments

Grove City Dental Dentist Honors Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month

It’s a shame that we as a society many times only worry about cures and not prevention when it comes to health. My office offers a service that will help detect oral cancer. Now that is not a prevention, but to detect oral cancer early gives a HUGE chance of curing the cancer. But it’s sad when insurance will not pay for the s$65 procedure and people many times decline the once a year oral cancer screening. It is called Vizalite and it’s proven to help detect oral cancer. Have you had an oral cancer screening? Consider this: You will probably spend more for a dinner out than it will cost you to get your oral cancer screening. Approximately 37,000 people in the US was newly diagnosed with oral cancer in 2010 and the number continues to grow. There are two distinct pathways by which most people come to oral cancer. One is through the use of tobacco and alcohol, a long term historic problem and cause, and the other is through exposure to the HPV-16 virus (human papilloma virus version 16), a newly identified etiology, and the same one which is responsible for the vast majority of cervical cancers in women. A small percentage of people (under 5 %) do get oral cancers from no currently identified cause. It is currently believed that these are likely related to some genetic predisposition.

Why Grove City Dental Uses Vizalite and Recommends An Annual Checkup

A person dies from oral cancer every hour of every day. If you add the sub category of laryngeal throat cancers, the rates of occurrence (about 10,000 additional new cases per year) and death are significantly higher. When found at early stages of development, oral cancers have an 80 to 90 % survival rate. Unfortunately at this time, the majority are found as late stage cancers, and this accounts for the very high death rate of about 45% at five years from diagnosis, and high treatment related morbidity in survivors. Late stage diagnosis is not occurring because most of these cancers are hard to discover, it is because of a lack of public awareness coupled with the lack of a national program for opportunistic screenings which would yield early discovery by medical and dental professionals.

Grove City Dental Cares. Please Let Us Help.

Even though insurance does not pay for the Vizalite oral screening when you consider the small cost of $65 in comparison to the potential life threatening cancers that can be detected and successfully treated it really makes the decision very easy. Call 614-808-1700 and set a time to get together with our office and get your screening completed this month. There’s no better time than today. April is a cancer awareness month. Become aware today.

Grove City Ohio -How Fresh Is Your Breath? Grove City Dentist Reveals The Top 5 Myths About BAD BREATH

Posted on: March 15th, 2012 by Dr. Schumann 4 Comments

If you have to ask the question: “Does my breath stink?” then the answer is probably YES! If you never ask the question ‘does my breath stink?’ then the answer is DEFINITELY Yes! Because we are constantly putting things in our mouths that require specific care to be sure that you AND the people around you do not suffer from halitosis otherwise known as BAD BREATH.

Bad breathe is one of life’s most personal problems. It can break business deals, stop love in its tracks and ruin otherwise fine relationships. If you eat, drink, speak or sleep, sooner or later bad breathe will get you. Left untreated, it can make life and the lives of those around you miserable.

We recognize NATIONAL FRESH BREATHE DAY on AUGUST 6th each year. But really, having fresh breathe is critically important all year long!

Here are the top 5 myths about BAD BREATH:
1. It’s the food

…Okay, we all know that onions and garlic leave behind an offensive odor, but this is only temporary. There are no foods that can be contributed to chronic bad breathe. (did you know that bad breathe plaques nearly 40 million people a year!) This condition and distinct odor is linked to elevated levels of sulfur-producing bacteria called volatile sulfur compounds (VCSs), which typically accumulate on the rough surface on the back of the tongue. So, continue to enjoy your spicy and flavorful foods…just brush thoroughly afterward!
2. If I had bad breathe I’d know it…
Ah, wouldn’t that be a relief? Not so fast, though. Research indicated we do not have the ability to smell our own bad breathe. This is attributed to adaptation and dulling of sensation due to continual exposure. Give yourself peace of mind that your breathe is always freshest by using a mouth rinse containing and active ingredient to neutralize odor-causing VSC’s. We recommend Oxyfresh, they have odor fighting ingredients that keep you fresh for up to 6 hours! We carry it in office- but check out our website to order!

3. My stomach’s to blame…
Only on very rare occasions does bad breathe result from stomach and/or digestive problems. Studies show that nearly 85% of that nasty odor originates in the mouth. Those sulfur-producing bacteria find their way in the crevices of the soft and hard tissues of the mouth and, primarily, the surface of the tongue. That’s why keeping your breathe its freshest starts with a clean tongue where VCS’s hide deep in the pockets. Brushing only removes 45% of the bacteria.
4. Brushing will eliminate the problem..

Unfortunately not. Brushing alone is not effective in eliminating the bacteria that is responsible for bad breathe. The daily regimen for thorough cleansing should also include flossing, deep tongue cleaning and using an oral irrigation to blast away hard to reach odor causing bacteria.

5. Mouthwash will rinse away my bad breathe…
If only it were that easy. A majority of store-bought mouth rinses are ineffective and actually worsen bad breathe. The problem is, most of these heavily advertised products simply hide mouth odors- or worse yet, compound the problem with moisture rubbing alcohol (up to 27%) and short- lived flavor additives. When alcohol is used to “kill the germs that cause bad breath”, as touted by nationally advertised brands those products are actually fueling the carrier of bad breathe by producing more dead bacteria.

Grove City Dental’s goal is to improve the quality of your life. Please provide us your comments and if you have a topic that you’d like for us to address regarding your oral hygiene then please let us know and we’d love to help. By the way, if we do not have your cell phone number as well as your email then you may not be receiving the most up to date and best discounts and special deals that are available so be sure to call the office at 614-801-1000 and provide that information.

Surprising Reason Why Toddlers Are Getting More Cavities & What Parents Must Do To Help

Posted on: March 12th, 2012 by Dr. Schumann 1 Comment

If you’ve never been to Grove City Dental then I’d like to invite you to come and experience the Grove City Dental Experience. And if you’ve been here then you know just how passionate I am about people using a straw when they drink anything. In fact, some people think I’m CRAZY because I’m constantly on my patients and staff to try to reduce the risk of cavities and surprisingly a straw can make a big difference. But it is not the solution and when you watch the video below you’ll soon discover that the challenge of more and more cavities at younger ages is getting worse.

One of the reasons there is  such a large increase is the deception of what is bad for your teeth. Everyone knows that the sugar content is bad for the teeth, but very few people under stand that acid content of a drink is very harmful and this is a silent killer of teeth. Drinks that you’d think are ‘good’ for you such as Gatorade and other sports drinks are good in some ways, but TERRIBLE for your teeth. And the number of children’s drinks that provide some vitamins may not be providing the best environment for your teeth. The proper professional cleaning and daily brushing is vital for your toddler’s dental health.

If you’re looking for a dentist in Grove City or looking to establish yourself with a dentist in Columbus, Oh, because you need of an assessment for your children’s dental health or if you suspect your child has a cavity it is in your best interest to get it cared for as soon as possible because the situation will not just take care of itself and the long term consequences.

Grove City Dental would value the opportunity to serve your dental needs. Give us a call at 614-808-1700 and be sure to ask about our new patient specials.
